I want to start my address by most sincerely thanking our host and our most respected ‘Jagaban Matasa’, Mallam Nasiru Adahama, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Youth and Student Matters, Federal Republic of Nigeria for agreeing to see us today in his office, ‘the Apex Youth Parliament in the Country’ despite busy official engagements. The Arewa Youth Forum is sincerely expressing its appreciation for this honour. It also goes to confirm your status as the most senior leader in Nigeria today as well your passion for the Youth and their struggle.
The SSA to the President, it is a moment of joy for us the umbrella body of Youth in Northern to be with you here today in your office for the first time on a courtesy call. It is also an avenue that will enable us pay our usual homage, lend our support to the ongoing wonderful activities of this office especially as its affects defending and promoting our vulnerable Youths. Most importantly, NEC Members of AYF are here to commend your various efforts aimed to ensure our Youth, having a larger proportion in our population are gainfully employed and productive in line with the President Buhari’s administration commitment to reduce unemployment in our Youth and making them become good Ambassadors.
Interestingly, our Organisation, which is the largest body of Youth from Northern extraction is not new to you but however, for the records, I wish to inform you that over the years, we have organized various developmental programs some of which are in partnership with Ministries, Agencies, Departments and with the office of SSA on Youth and Student Matters. I am therefore happy to inform you that recently, the AYF implemented the 1st circle of US Department of State fully funded ‘Conflict Mitigation and Peace Building Project’ in the four-4 States of Northern Nigeria i.e. (Kaduna, Bauchi, Nasarawa and Taraba) respectively, within the period of September 2014 to October 2015. The project was AYF noble contribution to the Federal and State Government’s efforts to help the Nation in addressing and mitigating the security and peace building challenges. We wish to report that the project as important as it were, achieved its desired objectives because it has served as an avenue where over one thousand Youths across these four mentioned States and twelve communities were trained as Community Peace Ambassadors and Actors. We are happy to also report that through this program, we able to reconcile between fighting communities and groups thereby making them to with one another. Our hope to these communities in the next phase of the program however, is to provide means and sources of economic livelihood for these trained Peace Actors; so that they can be economically engaged and empowered.
It is in view of the fore-goings and in order to expand our operational landscape in line with our establishment mandate that we kindly request our host the SSA to the President to kindly involve our organization in your programs and its implementation strategies. We believe that engaging or giving economic livelihood to those over one thousand trained Youths in those four States will go a long to assist this office and make a good record for President Mohammed Buhari’s administration. Sir, in your words, and I quote “'Our youth need mentors to guide and give them direction; they need skills in our offices, organization, and factories. Our strategy therefore is to partner with those that are already engaging the labour force to provide mentorship, training and guidance towards building required skills for economic development'. Arewa Youth Forum is however, hopeful and passionate that you will and capable of approving our request.
